Þráðhyggja/Fibsession
Þráðhyggja/Fibsession is a research project focusing on elongating the lifespan of textile waste in Iceland using recycling developed by the design duo Bosk and Sól Hansdóttir. The research was conducted at the Icelandic Textile Center during a three month period in 2021, sponsored by Icelandic Research Center and the Design Fund, worked in collaboration with Iceland University of the Arts and Icelandic Textile Center as well as sourcing all the textile from the Icelandic Red Cross. Methods used are based on well-known Icelandic craftsmanship and classic techniques such as felting, knitting and weaving. The project aims to lay the foundation for a recycling economy for waste textiles in Iceland and to fully recycle them. The textile is shredded into threads or fibers and recycled into a new textile for a new product.
From the research at the Icelandic Textile Center
Designers Bosk and Sól Hansdóttir will showcase a capsule collection of garments created using recycling methods developed by the team during a residency in Icelandic Textile Center. The capsule collection is created using all locally resourced waste textile with emphasis on recycling tea towels. Shapes are inspired by Icelandic knitting patterns and focus on exalting the charming colours and prints already in the tea towels. The collection was created with support from the Icelandic Textile Center, Icelandic University of Art and The Icelandic Red Cross.
